Tips To Keep Your Children Safe Inside Their Bedroom
When you have really young kids at home, your priority should be their safety. The bedroom has to be one of the most important places that you need to focus on.
First of all, determine if your child can sleep on a bed. Younger children are safer when they are placed in a cot. That piece of furniture will have rails that can keep your child from falling out of the bed. Also, a large bed might not be appropriate for a very small child. Older children who need bigger places to sleep in can have a bed. You need to change the cots that they have always slept on with a small bed. If you want, you can even have side rails installed on that small bed.
The cots need to have additional protection. There are those products that are made from hardwood. Your child can bump on the rails and that can be a cause of injury. Make sure that you place something soft on the sides. Thin pillows that are held in place may be enough.
The bed has to be low in order to avoid injuries when your child falls out of it. When the bed is not too high, there might be no need for you to use side rails. You also shouldn't worry and shouldn't keep checking on your child to see if he or she is tucked in bed. Even in the middle of the night, there will be no worries that your child has fallen off his or her bed.
Decide where it will be best to position the bed. Placing it against a wall can be a good idea as the wall can serve as additional safety guard. However, you also risk the chance of injuring your child when he or she bumps into the hard surface of the wall. If you have no other choice but to place the bed near a wall, consider placing padding on the part of the wall that is adjacent to the bed.
The bed, however, has to be kept away from a window. You don't want to give your child an extra leverage in order to reach the window's lock. If you have blinds or curtains hung on those windows, they may likewise serve as risks for accidents.
When you have mats beside or under the bed, make sure that they are non-slip. Your child can jump off the bed, step on the mat and slip. You wouldn't want this to happen.
Make sure that the bed is sturdy. There shouldn't be any parts that can be removed easily. As much as possible, the bed's structure should not be moving or swaying when someone gets on it. The screws have to be placed correctly. There shouldn't be any missing screws. Regularly check those parts of the bed. You have to make sure that there are no protruding parts. Also check if there are parts that are falling off. You will make sure that your child is safe by preventing whatever accident from happening.
